9 Products for Flourishing 4C Hair

Written by 4CHC Team -

We can’t get enough of 4C hair.

It’s the tightest type on the curl spectrum, growing in a super tight coil-shaped pattern. Remember slinky toys from the 90s?

That’s the cute, springiness of 4c hair!

Now, there are a number of things to keep in mind when trying to keep our 4C kinks and coils healthy, but the most important task is to keep your hair hydrated, as type 4 hair tends to have a particularly difficult time holding onto moisture.

Porosity and the density of your hair are also crucial factors that can affect how you care for your hair and which products will work best.

So in essence, finding your holy grail team of products and the methods that work best to get the hair of your dreams will take a bit of experimenting.

Tapping into the array of 4C bloggers, celebrities influencers, and vloggers that exist can give you a good sense of what products and methods may work.

But since we have 4C hair too, we thought it would be beneficial to round up some of the products we feel are essential for your natural hair routine.

Here are our picks for everything from cleansing your coils to the tool that will change your hair game.

Hold It Down Shampoo

With a cloud-like texture that makes us nostalgic for marshmallows, this shampoo serves up a soft lather, while still being gentle on your scalp and hair. It’s infused with lemon to calm, aloe to purify, and argan oil to hydrate.

BREAD Beauty Supply Hair Wash Gentle Milky Hair Cleanse, $20

Slippery Silk Conditioner

Selling out by the day, this conditioner is hydrating goodness in a jar. It deeply nourishes your 4C strands and is infused with clear quartz crystals and lavender essential oil.

Meraki Organics Quartz Conditioner 4 oz., $30

THE Product Every 4C Natural Needs -- A Deep Conditioner

Designed to replenish moisture with certified organic ingredients including fatty acids and natural oils, this deep conditioner hydrates and infuses your coils and kinks with hair-strengthening protein.

MIELLE Babassu Oil & Mint Deep Conditioner, $13.99

Mask Off! Well Actually, Mask On…

One of the OG natural hair care brands, Carol’s Daughter, has created a deeply hydrating mask that’s specifically formulated for dry hair: a concern that 4C naturals know better than most.

Both coconut oil and milk, mango, and murumuru butter are all included. We advise adding it to your hair as the last step of your in-shower session, letting it work its magic for 5 minutes and then combing through your coils to detangle.

Carol’s Daughter Coco Crème Curl Quenching Deep Moisture Mask, $12

Softer Hair? Yes, Please!

Tracee Ellis Ross created Pattern Beauty specifically for curls, coils, and kinks. The brand’s leave-in conditioner sets a good moisture foundation after a hydrating in-shower session with a formula that is lightweight, but gets the job done.

Pattern Beauty Leave-In Conditioner, $25

Fluffiness in A Jar

It’s of the utmost importance that your strands get moisture everyday or every other day. This shea and cocoa-butter infused cream will leave your hair shiny and soft.

Tgin Butter Cream Daily Moisturizer, $14.99

Somebody Called for Shine?

Powered by vitamin-rich amla extract, jasmine oil, and sunflower oil, this fortifying hair serum boosts hair growth and will leave your hair softer than it’s ever been. We recommend using it to give yourself a weekly scalp massage, or to simply nourish your strands whenever they need moisture.

Ranavat Fortifying Hair Serum: Mighty Majesty, $70

A Throwback Gel, Please!

Afro Sheen is one of the OGs when it comes to hair care products for Black people, so we already figured that grabbing for this flaxseed oil-infused styler with soft hold would please our strands. It also features shea butter and coconut oil for hydration, so your strands will still have softness and none of that crunch and stiffness you can get from other gel formulations.

Afro Sheen Texture Setting Cream Gel, $7.48

Because Detangling Should Be Easy

While 4c naturalistas may be skeptical of wash-n-gos, this startup company turned down Shark Tank and went on to absolutely flourish… plus gave us one of the best detangling tools we’ve ever seen!

This brush is flexible through and through, from the bristles, to the actually spine of the brush. It moves WITH your coils and not against them. Detangling our 4C hair is absolutely crucial and this makes the process effortless so you can glide through your hair with ease.

CurlMix Flex Brush, $25
