From one old “natural hair” head to another, I want to say thank you. Back in the day, a sister couldn’t search the internet and find 70.6 million videos on natural hair like she can today. No, my loves. Back then, there were very few people in the natural hair game brave enough to share their hair journeys on the internet. It definitely wasn’t going to be me. In 2004, I was a new natural searching for inspiration, guidance, and style ideas. When I first stumbled on your site, MotownGirl.com, I had no idea that I could make my own homemade hair recipes! The idea of whipping up some magical elixir in my kitchen with honey, egg, avocado, you name it, was mind-blowing before I found you.
With 2 inches of kinky “baby” hair on my head, I spent hours stalking your site, different natural hair Fotki albums, and other sites like Nappturality.com to learn how to care for my fuzzy TWA. Yeah, I stumbled a lot. I even fell down once or twice. Dare I admit it? I confess to moisturizing my hair with pure EVOO, going to bed with my bandana scarf (gasp!), and waking up with a grease stain straight out of Coming to America. SoulGlo, anyone? Yup, that happened.
But as I continued to struggle, something beautiful came out of it: a fascination with and love for my natural hair. That’s right, MY natural hair. Even though I rock locs now, I credit you with de-mystifying loose natural hair, teaching me how to create my own products, and showing me that I wasn’t the only person out there willing to go against the grain and scrap the creamy crack.
Thank you, Motown Girl. From one old head to another, I appreciate you,
