The beauty of art is the awe that it inspires. How can someone capture a moment or emotion so eloquently and encapsulate it in a piece of work? It’s amazing and exhilarating. At 4c Hair Chick we love finding up and coming artists and we love celebrating talented artist in the fine art establishment. In the hustle and bustle of today’s world it’s nice to stop and let our imaginations carry us in to the worlds’ and stories of artists who choose to share with us their pieces of mastery. Welcome to another addition of our Art Feature Series…
What is your hometown?
St. Thomas USVI
What is your art specialty? i.e Fine art, pottery, etc.
Do you prefer for your drawings to be called drawings, doddles or sketches?
Painting or drawings work.
Your drawings have become very popular in the natural hair community. What prompted you to start these drawings?
When I went natural and got into the natural hair community I saw so many people sharing their talents to encourage and inspire this group and I wanted to be a part of it. I wanted to make art for people raising their children in this community because growing up there weren’t many if any positive images of women with natural hair and I wanted to show that. I began blogging to contribute and share my work.
How often do you create new art?
I try to draw and paint every day!
How long does it typically take you to create a new piece?
Depending on the detail of the piece between 1 to 2 hours sometimes just 5 minutes.
Are you in school or did you go to art school?
I graduated from Pratt Institute in 2012 and I have a BFA in Communication Design.
Out of your current body of art what is your favorite piece?
My favorite piece is of two girls hugging with big afros. It is very simple but its everything I aim to create. I’m in love with the patterns and the cute children, I just want to put it on everything!
How do you plan to showcase your art in the future? Is your interest in doing commission work, art shows, or working for a company?
I am working on a few outlets now such as self publishing on amazon and creating pieces that I will one day sell at a hair convention. I want to make things that people want in their homes. I love art that you live with. I am open to commission work and I love art shows because its exciting to see all your work hanging in one place. I am open to all opportunities to show my art and I am welcome to any suggestions.
Often times our image of what is and isn’t beautiful is shaped by the experiences we have growing up. With that in mind is there a particular beauty asthetic that you are drawn to? Why or why not?
I love cartoons! I watched them growing up and I watch them now. I was also a big fan of anime growing up so I love big eyes and big smiles. I love the loose style of shows like Adventure Time and the bright color choices they make. And I absolutely love children’s books I probably own more than a hundred.
How do you feel about the way black women are portrayed in mainstream media?
I love how black women are being portrayed more with their natural hair in media today. It used to only be shiny straight hair everywhere but now we are seeing curls and its so great!
